Philosophy

Form

Jeff Marks' philosophy is simply that the form of a bowl is purely functional. A bowl is a symbol of security and fulfillment. A bowl can represent warmth and security. The aesthetics of a graceful bowl mimic nature. Like a pool of fresh spring water or a bowl of hot soup, the form of a bowl is basic. And while the fair flowing form of a bowl's profile can be described mathematically, the fair lines of a graceful form are evident at first glance.

The Conservation Mentality of Stave Bowl Making

Typically, when turning a bowl, the inside is hollowed out. The entire inside volume is wasted. I have developed this method of bowl building in order to make economical use of materials. Yet this method also produces special aesthetic quailities only found in stave bowls. The staves create patterns on the interior of the bowl and different patterns on the exterior.

Function

A gracefully shaped bowl filled with potpourri gives your guests a visual and aromatic sense of calm. An elegant bowl filled with fruit can give visitors a sense of security.
